Word up Your French: flemme
"Flemme" is such a nice word. I like that it is a mix between "femme" (woman) and "flamme" (flame) but actually means something completely different. I also feel it is a strong word to define my general state of mind.
What exactly does it mean?
Flemme, noun, is the word you use when you want to notify the people around you that you don't want to do anything and that you are too lazy to start up any activity (in extreme situation, this includes getting off the sofa).
Where does it come from?
The word "flemme" has been quite obviously stolen from italian "flemma", which literaly means "apathy", "phlegm". From there, one can easily find synonyms. I think "laziness" and "placidity" are accurate ones.
Now how am I supposed to use it?
"Flemme" is usually used with the verb "avoir" as in "avoir la flemme de faire quelque chose". However, when you're feeling really too lazy to even say the whole sentence, you can just discard an invitation to go out with your loved ones by simply saying "La flemme".
A good example of flemme can be found in Bruno Mars's "Lazy song". Basically, Bruno is telling the world that he is not combing his hair today, because he has la flemme.
