MY TIME AT THE FRENCH INSTITUTE
I have had an amazing opportunity of doing my work shadowing placement at the French Institute for two weeks and was assigned to work in 'La Médiathèque'. It's a huge space full of French books for adults and children, French films and CD's. It is newly renovated in the style of 1920's Art Deco. It defiantly lives up to its name as the largest French library in the UK as every corner you turn gives you the opportunity to delve deeper into French culture.They also host a range of events for children and adults, giving everyone the opportunity to experience French culture first hand.
As an aspiring linguist, the biggest challenge I have had to overcome is my nerves when speaking to other people. In class , we do not learn conversational aspects of the language but French around a specific topic. Although it is useful, it's not all that practical when working in an office .This work placement is helping me to overcome that barrier of fear. Of course I am only spending two weeks here and trust me I have a long way to go. However, I am sure that putting myself in situations like this is going to help me understand how to converse with others without feeling totally out of place. I feel so lucky as this really is a one of a kind opportunity because I don't just get to come as a visitor, but I get to work here.The people who work here are also great company to have, they are all patient and really want me to learn more. I really would recommend visiting the French Institute as it is a great place to kick start your French. They have language CD's and books that will help you to understand how the language works. It also has a café and a cinema that shows a wide range of French films. So if you feel as though you want to escape the UK even for an hour, without the travel expenses and the stress, the French Institute is the place for you.
Pendant dix jours j'ai travaillé pour l'Institut Français dans la Médiathèque. Je ne vais pas vous mentir, c'est un challenge pour moi car c'est une question de confiance. En raison de problèmes d'anxiété il va de soi que cette expérience n'est pas facile. Mais grâce à mes collègues j'avoue que c'est plus amusant que je pensais. Pour moi, c’était le premier jour qui était le plus difficile. A l’école on apprend des sujets épineux par exemple la racisme, la pauvreté ou les choses comme la cinéma ou la publicité. Pour moi c'est fascinant mais ce n'est pas utile dans la vie quotidienne. Au bureau je n'avais rien à dire parce je ne savais pas le vocabulaire. Des que j'ai débuté, j'ai commencé á comprendre et interagir avec tout le monde de temps en temps. Je dois avouer que ce n'est pas facile et il y avait des moments qui étaient vraiment embarrassants. Cependant, je dirais que la chose la plus importante est de faire de son mieux. L'institut Français est un endroit excellent pour découvrir une autre culture. Il y a beaucoup de CD, de livres et de films qui vous permettent d'apprendre plus sur le langue. Le bâtiment a été rénové dans le style des années 1920 Art Deco et c'est absolument époustouflant. Il y a des activités pour les enfants, les ados et les adultes ainsi qu'un cinéma et un bistro. Je n’oublierai pas mon temps ici car de sortir de ma zone de confort m'a ouvert l'esprit et m'a aidé á rencontrer des gens de cultures différentes. Donc si vous voulez découvrir quelque chose de génial cet été même si c’est juste pour une heure, visitez l'Institut Français!
