Krazy about Kerangal

I have two very important reasons for writing this blog:

1) The last one I wrote about Maylis de Kerangal was washed away with the last Culturethèque crash (let's not talk about that)

2) There's a Reading Group this evening, so take this as a "look what you've missed out on, you silly billy".

Maylis is an award winning editor, novelist and writer who scooped up the Médicis Prize for Naissance d'un pont (Birth of a Bridge). Her sentences are long, but ever so intricate. Her style is poetic, but not over the top. In short, she's the next big thing.

Here's what an Amazon review said about Naissance d'un pont:

I was carried away by the voice of the narrator, the very clipped rhythm had a succinct yet melodic song that pulled me into the story. It speaks of our globalised world, the way large infrastructure projects might come about in less developed nations, the nomadic life of the specialized laborers who travel from one project to the next. The forever changes to the lives of the people who live around mega projects.

Told you so!

Click here to buy a ticket (only a fiver!) for tonight's Reading Group - chaired by Dr Dominic Glynn (Lecturer in French Studies at the IMLR).

Click here to listen to a podcast of her visit to the Institut français last year.

And point your eye direction a bit further down the page to watch Maylis reading her own work. Lovely jubbly.

Oh and if you want more, click the cover to read another of her works on Culturethèque for free..
