Reading Europe - Have your say!

We're all in this together!

In less than three months, the United Kingdom will decide whether to leave the European Union or not. In the run up to the referendum, here’s one fresh and innovative campaign for all those people out there who enjoy a good read! Reading Europe is a list of 49 really, really good novels from 23 countries and translated into English. Each book tells the reader about the literature, history and culture of a particular country, and together they make a cultural case for the United Kingdom remaining IN Europe. It’s basically a virtual literary festival, a cultural mosaic, an exciting project launched by Dedalus publisher Eric Lane. Two books have been chosen to give a literary insight into France: The Book of Nights by Sylvie Germain, translated by Christine Donougher, published by Dedalus. An epic novel with great emotional intensity, recounting one hundred years of French history and three Franco-Prussian conflicts through the lives of the Peniel family. Rough Trade by Dominique Manotti, translated by Margaret Crossland and Elfreda Powell, published by Arcadia. A fast-moving story tracing the dark, sinuous paths of sinister events that are unfolding in Le Sentier, the heart of the Parisian rag-trade. Click here to discover the rest of the list! But this is all about shared culture, so French Books UK is launching its very own consultation. This isn't about yes or no, this is about BOOKS! Send us your suggestions as to which French books translated into English YOU want to see in our French Books UK Spring List. Tweet us a list of your three titles @FrenchBooksUK, and get a chance to win a selection of books. If you want to tell us about your titles in more detail, send a short two-paragraph piece to bdl@institutfrancais.org.uk for a chance to see it published on this very blog!
