Interview with Riad Sattouf

We had the chance to interview Riad Sattouf for the British release of his graphic book The Arab of the Future, translated by Sam Taylor and published by Two Roads.

Riad Sattouf is a best-selling cartoonist and filmmaker of Franco-Syrian origin. Born in Paris, he spent his childhood in Syria and Libya and came back to France as an adult to work for the French magazines Libération and Charlie Hebdo. He is now a weekly columnist for l’Obs Magazine.

Riad has a large autofictional production, but led by “l’envie de faire un truc plus autobiographique” (the wish to do something more autobiographical) he chose to write about his childhood in the already-rewarded Arab of the Future. He also focuses on teenagers in general, and has written as well as directed a couple of movies. He says he tries to show that “le monde est étrange autour d’eux” (the world is weird when seen through teenagers' eyes). “Je ne sais pas si j’ai un regard adolescent sur le monde mais je suis très intéressé par les jeunes et l'adolescence”. (I don't know if I have an adolescent look on the world, but I'm very interested in youngsters and teenagers)
