FILM REVIEWS from Fulham Prep School - 'Les Malheurs de Sophie'

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming year 7 class from Fulham Prep School who submitted their film reviews for 'Les Malheurs de Sophie' directed by Christophe Honoré, in French! Read their eminently written comments about the film below:

I think that Sophie is quite a naughty girl and it is funny to watch some of her misfortunes as they are crazy! One of my favourite scenes was when Sophie, Paul, Camille and Magdalene made the funeral ' for Sophie's doll, her funeral consisted of putting the doll in a box and throwing her in the water. I also found it funny and very creative when Sophie made tea for her friend putting soapy water as milk, water from the dog’s bowl as tea and chalk for the sugar. I thought that the actors were great for such a young age. I would also say that that this film is age appropriate for any age. Overall I would rate this film 5 out of 5 stars!

An amazing performance from new actress Caroline Grant as Sophie de Réan made viewers want to be part of what is a magical masterpiece. The classic idea of a horrible stepmother would make anyone want to help Sophie all the way through a joyful story. The evil little girl we saw towards the beginning of the film adapted into a clever and tough girl who would never give up. Colourful animations lit up the room and were one of the highlights of the film. I rate the film 5 stars out of 5.

This film was originally made from a book written in 1872. The film is well made. It managed to entertain me all the way through. I liked the plot of the film, and I never got bored. I enjoyed the scene when Sophie de Réan made the horrible tea for her friends, using water from the dog’s bowl, and using chalk for sugar. I also liked the animations, and the actors were very good and comical. I would give this film 4 out of 5 stars.

Sophie’s Misfortunes is a film released in 2016 by director Christophe Honoré. The main protagonist is Sophie de Réan played by Caroline Grant. A speciality of the movie is that it has little animated animals which bring life and colour to the movie.

The plot is mainly about little Sophie who lives in a castle in the south of France. Despite living a happy and good life she is naughty. For example, she steals her mother’s golden crafting kit and then lies to her about it.

One day her father is included in the legacy of an American and the family decide to move to America. Tragically, her mother dies so she lives with her father. Her father eventually remarries but sadly dies months later. Sophie has to live with her evil stepmother in France.

The movie is warm with a classical story and the cliché of an evil stepmother. We see a change in the mentality of Sophie who turns from a young girl being tempted by silliness to a more mature version of her. The plot is very emotional and has happy and sad moments. The scenes are colourful and there is a great soundtrack which makes this film a great movie to watch. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved this movie as it had a great plot as well as some funny characters.

The main character of the story is a little girl called Sophie who lives in a château with her mother. She has lots of maids that she likes to play tricks on and sometimes even tricks her friends.

She was very funny and mischievous and had me laughing all the way through especially when she took water from her dog’s water bowl to make tea for a tea party with her friends.

Unfortunately when her family decide to go to America there is a tragic accident. So after a few years Sophie’s stepmother has to take care of Sophie in France. Regrettably she is wicked and mean and there is a sudden race to get Sophie out of her stepmother's reaches.

If you are looking for a funny and exciting movie, then this is your movie. It is a marvellous creation by Christophe Honoré. I would give it a five out of five star rating.
